How to Level a Pool Table: Step-by-Step Leveling Guide

Why Leveling Matters More Than Anything Else

A pool table that's off by even a sixteenth of an inch will show it. Balls will drift subtly toward the low side, soft shots will miss pockets that should fall, and reading the table becomes guesswork instead of skill. Over fifteen years of play, I've watched more frustrated players blame their stroke when the real villain was a settled leg or a shifted shim. Level is the foundation of every shot you take.

Wooden and composite tables can shift over time as floor boards move with seasons, legs compress slightly under the combined slate and rail weight, and shims settle into carpet. A table that was perfectly leveled at installation is almost never still level a year later, especially in homes with solid hardwood floors that react to humidity. Seasonal leveling checks are a non-negotiable part of responsible table ownership.

Tools: The Level Makes the Job

The single most important tool is your level. A quality six-to-eight-foot carpenter's level is the minimum, and longer is better. Short levels give false readings because they span a smaller section of the slate and miss overall slope. A three-foot level can show bubble-centered on one spot while a six-foot level reveals the table has a quarter-inch drop across its full length.

For serious accuracy, a billiards-grade digital level reads to the thousandth of an inch and removes human error in reading bubble vials. I've owned a digital level for the last six years and it's paid for itself in time saved and precision gained. Alongside the level you'll need wooden shims, composite leveling jacks or adjustable foot pads (better), a pencil for marking, a flashlight, and patience. Leveling is slow work done right.

Before any leveling work, clean the slate of all dust and chalk. Particles trapped under a level give false readings that lead to shim mistakes.

Check All Four Rails First

Start by placing your level along each of the four rails: both long rails and both short rails. Walk the level the full length of each side and note any reading where the bubble isn't perfectly centered. Mark problem zones lightly with pencil on a piece of tape (never on the cloth directly). A quick four-rail check takes about five minutes and reveals gross leveling errors before you bother with finer measurements.

If a rail reads off, you haven't yet determined which leg is causing it. That comes next. The rail check only confirms the table is off. Note the direction and degree of each off-level reading so you can triangulate where to shim. Record the readings on paper if multiple rails are off. A table off in two directions is common and needs both axes corrected.

Check the Center of the Playing Surface

After rails, lay your level in the center of the slate across the long axis, then across the short axis, then along both diagonals. The center readings tell you whether the slate itself is level, independent of the rails. Sometimes rails show an issue because one rail is loose or warped, not because the table is off. Center slate readings rule that out.

If center readings match rail readings, you have a true leveling issue rooted in the legs or floor. If center readings are clean but rail readings are off, the problem is rail-related, not leg-related. Inspect rail bolts for looseness and the rails themselves for any visible warp. Correct rail issues before shimming. Shimming to compensate for a bent rail just creates worse problems.

Shim Legs, Never Slate

Here's the cardinal rule of pool table leveling: shim under the legs, not under the slate. Slate sits on a frame, and the frame rests on legs. Adding shims between the frame and slate twists the slate itself, which can crack the stone, open seams, and ruin the level you're trying to correct. Shims go under the leg feet, pressing up against the floor.

Determine which leg is low by the rail and center readings. If the table drops from east to west, the west legs need shimming up. If it drops diagonally, one corner leg usually needs the most adjustment. Lift that corner just enough to slide a shim under, starting thin. Most pool tables need no more than a sixteenth-inch shim in any one spot. Thicker shim stacks become unstable. If you need more than a quarter inch of shim, something else is wrong with the floor or frame and needs inspection.

Use multiple thin shims rather than one thick one. Three 1/32 inch shims stacked give you finer adjustment and a more stable platform than a single 3/32 inch shim.

Leveling Jacks vs Shims

Modern pool tables often include leveling jacks or adjustable foot pads built into each leg. These let you raise or lower each leg by turning a threaded foot, replacing shims entirely. If your table has them, use them instead of shims. They're more stable, easier to fine-tune, and won't slip on hardwood or tile floors the way shims sometimes do.

For older tables without built-in jacks, aftermarket leveling jacks can be retrofitted under each leg. They're a one-time investment that pays off at every future leveling check. Turn each jack a quarter turn at a time while reading the level and watching for improvement. Small adjustments produce visible changes. Big adjustments overshoot and send you backward.

The Final Roll Test

After leveling with the instrument, confirm with the oldest test in the book: roll a ball slowly across the table in multiple directions and watch it. Roll from one long rail toward the other, then from short rail to short rail, then diagonally. On a properly leveled table, the ball rolls straight to a gradual, even stop. Any drift shows remaining slope in the direction of the drift.

This is where a digital level sometimes disagrees with an old-school carpenter's level, and the roll test settles it. Trust the ball. If an instrument says level but the ball drifts, the instrument is wrong (often because of a tiny debris particle) or the slate has a very subtle warp that only shows under real conditions. Adjust until the ball rolls honest in every direction.

Seasonal Rechecks

Rechecking level every season is my standard practice. Spring and fall are the big ones, because humidity swings most affect floor movement then. Summer can add a midseason check if you live somewhere with big temperature extremes. Each check takes about fifteen minutes and either confirms the table is still good or catches a slight drift before it becomes an obvious problem.

Homes with carpet over concrete are the most stable. Hardwood over joists is the least stable, especially older homes. New builds settle for two to three years after construction and need more frequent leveling checks than mature homes. If you notice any change in play quality, check level before assuming anything else. A half-hour with your level fixes more play problems than any cue upgrade ever could.
